Why did the lender call my job again right before closing?
August 21, 2026 · Written by Bill Egan, NMLS 7342
Short answer
Because the investor requires a fresh check that you still work there. For regular wage income, Fannie Mae wants that confirmation within 10 business days before you sign the note. It is usually a phone call or an electronic check to your employer. At Egan Financial Group LLC it is a normal last step, not a sign the loan is falling apart.
01
Why this comes up
Closing is days away. Someone from a number you do not recognize called payroll. You or your boss thought it was a scam. Or human resources does not take calls, and the verifier cannot get through. You are afraid the loan will miss the date over a game of phone tag.
02
Where this goes wrong
The employer will not confirm current employment. You already gave notice and did not tell us. The 10-business-day window is missed, and we have to call again. The Closing Disclosure — the final numbers you get at least three business days before signing — is already out. The seller’s truck is booked. A job you already left cannot be confirmed, and funding stops.
03
What we do about it
We warn you that this call is coming. We use the employer contacts that actually answer. If human resources only uses a work number or a third-party vendor, we set that up early. Egan Financial Group LLC funds the loan here, so we are not waiting on a national vendor the morning you are supposed to sign.
04
How to get ready
Tell human resources a mortgage verifier will call. Give us the right department, not a general 800 number that rings out. Do not quit or go on unpaid leave without telling us. Keep your phone on during the last two weeks. If you work through a union or on short assignments, tell us how your work is confirmed so we call the right desk.
