Will shopping around for a mortgage hurt my credit score?
October 26, 2026 · Written by Bill Egan, NMLS 7342
Short answer
Shopping for a mortgage usually does not hurt your credit much if you keep the inquiries in a short window. Credit bureaus group multiple mortgage pulls within 14 to 45 days as a single inquiry for scoring. That keeps the impact small while you compare lenders. We pull your credit once and can work from that report so you avoid extra hard pulls on your file.
01
Why this comes up
First-time buyers hear that every credit check lowers their score, so they worry that talking to more than one lender will cost them points right when they need a strong score.
02
Where this goes wrong
A buyer waits weeks between applications, or applies with several lenders over a month. The inquiries stop counting as one event, and the score can drop a few points before an offer is accepted.
03
What we do about it
We pull your credit one time at the start and use that report for your pre-approval. If you want a second opinion, we can discuss how the window works so any extra pull stays inside the grouping period.

How to get ready
Decide on a short shopping period, get your documents ready, and start the first application when you are ready to move forward. Check your free credit reports for errors before anyone pulls them.
